The US wants to charge and have a trial for terrorist recruiter Ali Charaf Damache. He is currently in Ireland which does have an extradition treaty with the United States but Ireland is refusing to extradite him due to concerns about our inhumane prison system. If he was found guilty he would be sent to a Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado where he would be in virtually 24/7 solitary confinement. His cell even has its own shower so he never has to leave. The cell also includes a 4 inch window. Why bother? 4 inches really?
The US stands a solid chance at convicting Damache but Ireland does not care as they will not send anyone anywhere to be tortured, executed, or treated inhumanly. According to the Los Angeles Times three people related to this terrorist recruiting scheme including Damache’s wife have already been convicted in the US.
This is the cell he would be in. Take a good look at it. That is the tiny cell he would be in 24/7. They also do not allow family visits and do not even get to look at a guard when food is delivered as it is slid through a slit in the door.
I am all for a prison that is escape proof but this is physiological torture and because our prison system is this bad we will not be able to have a trial for Ali Charaf Damache.
