New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is planning to go to the capital building next week and unveil a 21st century version of the Contract with America. Newt Gingrich introduced it in 1994. The New York mayor does not really have the clout to push this through. He is just a mayor and has nothing going for him in the political arena. Newt on the other hand was the house minority whip when he made his proposals.
Now Bill de Blasio could be sort of using this as a smoke screen as perhaps he wants to try to make a presidential run in 2016 and this could be a good way to get his platform out in the public. Either way this will be a push to the Democratic Party to move it more to the left.
Mayor de Blasio has laid out some priorities before such as raising the minimum wage, expanding employee benefits such as access to paid sick leave, and even progressive taxation.
We should find out on Tuesday at 3PM Eastern time what all will be in this plan.
